A Soldier’s Wife

I watch the rain slide down the glass

     My finger traces its path

Loneliness surrounds me

This old house too big without you

Too restless to sleep

     Too tired to struggle

Against these feelings of need

The need to see your smile

The need to feel your arms

The need to touch your lips

The need to smell your cologne

The need to hear your voice

The need to just be with you

How much longer must we wait

     Until we are together again

How much pain must we endure

     Until joy fills our souls

How much worry must we wrestle

Until we can share this life we love

Take care, husband of mine,

     While the road

Carries you far from me

     It also leads you home…
